According to the
Chicago Tribune, the Obama campaign released a statement giving "slightly" more details about Obama's relationship with Chicago developer Tony Rezko. Obama is alleging that the $1.65 million he paid for a mansion was the "best offer" the owner received, even though it was $300,000 below the asking price. The seller has allegedly confirmed that he did not give a "discount," even though Rezko's wife bought the adjoining empty lot for $625,000, the full asking price for the empty lot. Obama says that his offer was $1.3 million, and that he increased the offer twice. I am no real estate expert, but if the original asking price was $1.95 million, why in the world would any seller ever respond to a low ball first offer of $1.3 million? That's a difference of $650,000 or 33% less than the original asking price. Is that common? Maybe the mansion was overpriced to begin with? You make the call.
